PROVIDENCE - Michael W. Sears, 81, of Providence, peacefully departed this life on November 19, 2023, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Eileen M. (Capuano) Sears. They were married on May 20, 1967 and shared 56 wonderful years together.
Born on May 5, 1942, in Providence, Michael was the loving son of the late Joseph Sears and Angelina (Leonardo) Sears.
Mike was esteemed in Rhode Island's hockey community for his notable accomplishments. He was an all-state hockey goalie and contributed to Hope High School's All-State Championship victories in 1960 and 1961. While serving in the military, he served as a goalie for the US Army, competing internationally during his tenure. Continuing his passion for hockey into the late '70s, he founded the hockey program at Lincoln High School, leading the Lions to victory as Division Champions in 1978-79. He also coached Lincoln/Johnston Youth Hockey.
Mike had lots of hobbies, which included playing softball, fishing and gardening. An avid sports fan, Mike was always watching his beloved Bruins and Red Sox. A professional truck driver by trade, Mike was always up for an adventure and loved taking road trips with family and friends exploring New England and beyond.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose infectious smile and warm personality touched the lives of all who met him.
In addition to his wife, Eileen, Mike is survived by their beloved children, Michael Sears of Providence, RI and Christine Cooney of Bayonne, NJ. and grandchildren Brian and Megan Cooney. Mike leaves four siblings (and cherished friends), John Sears, Joseph Sears, Louis Sears and Barbara (Sears) Barboza.
