Obituary

MELBOURNE, FLORIDA- Robert E. Pugh, 87, of Melbourne, Florida, passed away surrounded by the love, comfort, and care of his devoted siblings, on Friday, July 3, 2020. He was the devoted husband of the late Florence “Flo” (Romano) Pugh, whom passed away in 2011.

Born on Oct. 27, 1932, in Jasper, Alabama, Robert was the dear son of John Q. and Marjorie (Ashmore) Pugh. He grew up in Birmingham, Alabama.

Following high school, Robert attended and graduated from Auburn University, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. He furthered his studies by enrolling and completing in the MBA program at Florida State University.


After receiving his MBA, Robert enlisted in the United States Navy. Having a strong background in math and science, he served as a jet pilot. It was during Robert’s time stationed at Quonset Point, he met the love of his life, Florence.

Following his service to the nation he loved, Robert spent time working as an engineer at the Space and Rocket Center in Cape Canaveral, FL. He later decided to transition into the finance and investment profession, where he was employed by Merill-Lynch. With his great work ethic, Robert retired from Merill-Lynch as the Vice President of Investments.

In his spare time, Robert had many hobbies and interests. Having the luxury of year-round Florida weather, Robert was an avid golfer. He and his wife were able to travel all around the world and he also enjoyed tending to his yard. Above all, he was most happy when he was in the presence of and making memories with his family and friends.

Robert is survived by his cherished siblings, Doris Bynum of Panama City, FL, Carol Hallmark of Wetumpka, AL, and J. Wayne Pugh of Birmingham, AL; and also, numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, Robert is predeceased by his brother, Bill Pugh.

Burial will be held privately at St. Francis Cemetery in Pawtucket, where he will be laid to rest with his wife.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of A.A. Mariani and Son Funeral Home, 200 Hawkins Street, Providence.
