William James Perry

August 13, 1955 ~ April 4, 2021 (age 65) 65 Years Old

Obituary

William was born on August 13, 1955 in Milford, DE to the late Katty Rae Perry and William Cannon. He was the brother of the late Delores Perry, Tyrone Perry, William Henry Perry, and is survived by his sister Tina Perry. 

Billy was known for his quick wit, infectious smile, and had a passion for all things related to basketball. He led the Central High School Knights to a State championship in 1973 and the New England State Championship in 1974 he then went on to RI Junior College, now CCRI. During the 1975-76 season, Billy averaged 9 assists per game, was voted 18th on the All Time Scoring list with 650 points, and was voted All Tourney MVP. The CCRI Knights went on to win a championship in 1977. 

On September 18, 1995 Billy was inducted into the CCRI Hall of Fame and on June 1, 2019 he was inducted into the New England Hall of Fame. 

Billy is survived by his 8 children, William J. Whetstone of McDonough, GA, Terrell J. Whetstone of Providence, RI, Shawana E. Jenkins, of Windsor, CT, Deanna M. Johnson of Warwick, RI, Kia J. Johnson of East Northport, NY, Vanessa M. Johnson of Providence, RI, Ashley D. Johnson of Providence, RI, and Wil I. Johnson, of Providence, RI. Aside from his children he leaves behind 23 grandchildren and a sole nephew, Jamal Perry of Providence, RI. 

Visitation will take place at A.A. Mariani & Son Funeral Home, 200 Hawkins St Providence, on Friday, April 9, 2021 from 10-12pm, followed by a service at 12pm. Burial to follow at North Burial Ground located at 5 Branch Ave, Providence. Social distancing and wearing of face masks are required.
